Tryouts/Team Offers

General Information

Starting at the 11U age group, WYSA requires that all players receive a specific team offer for the following year. Although, they do allow an exception for pooling players at 11U/12U, which a few clubs in our area use. We do not use pool offers, and require tryouts because we generally have more than one team at each age group and need these assessments to ensure we are grouping players into teams with similar levels of skills, maturity, focus, commitment, etc.

Team placement is determined by a combination of input from a player's Coach the preceding year, their performance during tryouts, how they fit in with their peer group, and possibly other relevant factors.

In the event that player numbers do not fit into the desired roster sizes, we may need to group players together so that everyone has a place to play. We may also work with neighboring clubs to find ways to combine players in a way that provides the greatest benefit to the players.

Should my player try out for multiple clubs?

Any players that are looking to maximize their individual opportunities to play at the highest levels are encouraged to try out for clubs that provide those opportunities. See our Youth Soccer System FAQ for information about those levels. We are very proud of the many players who grew up in our club and were then able to move up to play at some of the highest levels, win state championships, and play in college, so you can trust that we will give you the best guidance we can while thinking of your player's wants and needs first.

We encourage people considering these opportunities to seek guidance from our Directors, Coaches, President, etc who all have a wealth of knowledge and can help them make the best decisions for their players.

Somebody approached me and told me to have my son or daughter tryout with another club. What should I do?

The primary factor to consider when making a decision on what club to play for is what services do they offer, what is the quality of those services, what kind of commitment is required from you (cost, travel requirements, etc.), and what are their interests in your child. Multi-sport athletes should pay special attention to time commitment requirements.

For the most part, the clubs in our area provide the same kinds of services, but with varying levels of quality, expectations, and cost.  We are proud to have some of the highest licensed and experienced Coaches in our area, have a strong reputation for being able to develop players, and are able to compete in the same leagues as other clubs that may charge up to four times in total costs compared to us.

There are some clubs that do have special access to higher programs or leagues that are not available to us and others.  See our Youth Soccer System FAQ for information on those leagues.

Poaching

Keep in mind that any club approaching a parent/player outside of the official open-promotion period (around the end of the spring season leading up to tryouts) is a violation of our leagues' policies on poaching and can result in sanctioning or financial penalties to the offending club.

What should I know when considering a team offer?

The number one thing to understand when considering any offer is what it means. What is the team's level within the club, in what league will they be playing, what is the commitment level, etc. Some clubs use colors to identify team levels, some use names like  "Premier", "Elite", etc., or just an age group to indicate the team level. Thus, "Elite", "Premier", or "Red" may mean different things for different clubs. Our first teams are named Red, followed by White and then Gray.

Generally, teams are named from the top level down, so a "Premier" or "Elite" team may also be the only team at that age/gender at one club, or truly the top team among others at another club.  Thus, not all "first-team" offers are the same.

Clubs can generally say what league a team will be playing in, but its not guaranteed. Depending on which players accept their offers or not, a team may have been offered in one league but have to be downgraded to a lower one. Families should be especially cautious when looking at a team's prior season record to estimate placement, since players often move around a lot and it may not be same team playing next year.

Can you share which players are on which teams?

This information cannot be shared, for both privacy reasons and because it is not known until players respond to their team offers, which unfortunately often takes them the full 24 hours to do.

If you are ever concerned about what you should do for your player, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Directors of Coaching or our Club President and ask for guidance. It is our duty to act in the best interest of all our players.
