Welcome, to the 2017-2018 season! We are so excited to give you a glimpse into playing on a SPSC Recreation Team.
U9 & U10
Recreation Teams are the next step in a player’s development after “in-house” as they transition towards more competitive play. Players in this group range from beginners to those with prior experience. Teams are formed in early summer and play in both the fall and spring seasons as one team. Teams can only be formed if enough player’s register and coaches are available. Additional volunteer coaches are always welcome (and actually encouraged)!
Players moving into recreation leagues will now be part of the Madison Area Youth Soccer Association and gain exposure to a more formal soccer experience.
New for 2017-18 season SPSC, will have two programs to choose from:
The U11-14 Recreational teams have many similarities to their Competitive League counter parts. Players in this group range from some prior experience to skilled. Teams are formed in June and play in both the fall and spring seasons as one team. SPSC recreation teams play in MAYSA divisions with 8 league games each season. Half the games are played in Sun Prairie, with the remaining 4 games played mostly in Dane county. Participating in the P3 process is required for players to be considered for a team. These teams are coached by our Sun Prairie Soccer Club dedicated, and licensed, coaches and will typically practice twice per week. U11 and U12 games are played with 8 on a side while U13 and U14 play with 11 on a side. In these teams we'll focus on getting the players involved with the sport; get them out playing the game, learning about the game, all while having fun.
Q: Does my child have to participate in the Aspire program?
Q: Can I register my player after the deadline?
A: Registration for the 2017-2018 season will be open June 1-June 30. Late registrants will NOT be guaranteed placement on a team. Placement on a team will be contingent on team availability not to exceed maximum team sizes and availability of coaches. Late registrants will incur a processing fee and may have a delay in uniform receipt. We strongly suggest parents of late registrants offer to help coach.
Q: Are uniforms included in my player’s registration?
A: No, uniforms are not included in your player's registration. SPSC Recreation League uniforms are ordered through Stefan's Soccer. Shortly after your registration has been completed you will receive an email with a link to order. The deadline is TBD. All uniforms will be ordered and paid for by the parent or guardian.
A size chart is available for your reference. However, if you are unsure of sizing, please visit Stefan's in person to try on a sample. The SPSC custom Adidas uniforms are not refundable or exchangeable.
Q: How are teams assigned? Can I sign my player up with a friend or two?
A: All players in U9 and U10 are randomly assigned to teams to encourage fairness and opportunities for players to develop new friendships. The only exception to this rule allows up to three players per team to be preassigned PROVIDED their parents or guardians volunteer as team coach, assistant coach and manager. If this interests you, please fill in the Volunteer box during registration of each of the 3 players with 1) the names of the other players, 2) the names of all three parent/guardian volunteers and 3) the roles each parent/guardian plans to fill. Without this information we will need to verify the request across all 3 players.
Q: Will this recreation league have me driving all over the state?
A: Typically half of the league games are played in Sun Prairie, with the remaining games played in neighboring Dane County communities. Most of these games are located in Dane County and within 10 miles of Sun Prairie. Some travel of up to 40 miles may occasionally be necessary, but this is not the “norm”.
Q: How many players will be on the field at one time?
A: Recreation Team players will play on a larger field and goal and have 7 on a side (6 field players and a goal keeper). Outside referees are provided for all games. Players in the recreational league will also be required to purchase an official Sun Prairie Soccer Club numbered uniform. (See above)
Q: Are Recreation teams formed only for U9 and U10?
A: No. MAYSA currently offers recreation travel divisions for U9 through U14. However, beginning at U11 we have the option to place teams in Competitive leagues. At U11 and up we no longer place players on teams randomly but rather place players according to a comprehensive player assessment process. Once teams are formed the team is placed in either a competitive or recreational league based on the level of competition best suited for the team. See U9 – U11 Competitive Teams for more information.
Q: Will my player's recreational team be involved in tournaments?
A: Many teams at this level begin participating in area tournaments. This is an exciting opportunity for players to compete and gain field play experience in a more competitive environment. Each player's registration fee includes the cost of one tournament. Any additional tournaments will be an additional expense.
