Benji Brye - Boys Director of Coaching

Background

Benji grew up in Middleton, WI and began his playing career at the age of 5 when his mother volunteered to coach the city rec team, The Stingers.  He went on to play competitively at Yahara Soccer Club beginning at U12 and eventually played 3 years of varsity soccer at Middleton High School where he was a co-captain and helped achieve a NSCAA team ranking his senior year of 13th in the nation.
After graduation, Benji joined and continued playing several seasons for Madison United and jumped right into his coaching career taking on freshmen, JV, and assistant varsity coaching positions in both boys and girls programs at Middleton before ultimately taking over the girls varsity program for 2 years in 2001.  He also led multiple club teams at Regent Soccer Club and Middleton Soccer Club before stepping away from coaching to raise a family.  After moving to Sun Prairie in 2007, Benji finally began coaching for SPSC in 2015 – first for his son, Jackson, and later for his daughter, Lucy.

Coaching Philosophy

As someone that has been involved with soccer at various levels nearly all my life in both playing and coaching capacities, I have come to believe very strongly that, above all else, soccer should be FUN for those kids that choose to participate in it. After all, why else would they want to play when there are so many other activities competing for their precious time and attention? The idea of “fun” can mean different things to different players – especially at the younger age groups where abilities and commitment levels can fall along a very broad spectrum.

My job is to create an environment that allows those differing mindsets to align and flourish by providing 1) the basic necessities required for all players (and parents) to enjoy the game 2) the appropriate challenges to foster improvement in the players’ athletic ability, and 3) the guidance and direction to nurture their long-term psychological growth, which will aid not only in the game of soccer but, more importantly, life in general.
